History of Colonization Timeline
Overview: Egyptian people have long been the subject of colonization. Egyptian people have been conquered by a multitude of religious and political groups, which have in turn allowed for a rich culture with many unique traditions. Egypt's independence is extremely young when compared to its history.
3100-332 B.C: During this time period, Ancient Egypt was established when the Upper and Lower kingdoms were combined. During this time frame, pyramids and hieroglyphics appeared. This time frame is crucial as it officially establish the Egyptian people and allowed for cultural development. More information found here.
332 B.C: The 300 year long dynasty of Alexander the Great begins as a result of his conquest of Egypt from his home country of Macedonia. Unlike many other colonization influences in Egypt, Alexander the Great mostly allowed Egypt to keep its culture as long as they fed his troops. More Info.
30 B.C: Cleopatra kills herself and Rome takes control of Egypt. Rome's rule began with Augustus. The first century under Roman control created a thriving and prosperous country. Roman control of Egypt sparked many cultural changes which cause this era to be entirely unique and studied frequently by historians. More Information.
642-1517 A.D: Arab leader captures Alexandria and takes control of Egypt. The Arabic people bring the religion of Islam to the people of Egypt who quickly adopt the religion. More information found here and here.
1914-1956 A.D: Great Britain takes control over Egypt. As a result of Imperialism, Great Britain saw the economic advantages of Egypt's natural resources, but more importantly looked to the Suez Canal as a cash cow. More information on the Suez Canal crisis found here.
1922 A.D: Egypt gains freedom and becomes independent of Britain. In March of 1922, Fuad I became the first king of Egypt. More info.
